Chapter 15
Chief Abrams was the first to arrive, followed soon after by Agent Tompkins and Detective Williams. The FBI agent went straight to his aunt and gave her a long hug. Dianne began another crying jag that lasted for several minutes. I tossed the agent a box of tissues and watched as he did his best to comfort her. As bad as she was, I knew I’d be in even worse shape if something similar had happened to Chloe or any of our other dogs.
We waited until Dianne composed herself then the Chief removed his notebook and flipped to a fresh page.
“Okay,” he said, focusing on me. “Start at the beginning.”
I did.
When I finished telling the story I sat back and waited for what I was sure would be several questions.
“The car was running without lights?” the Chief said.
“Yeah,” I said softly. “It came over the crest of the hill and was on top of us before we knew it.”
“And you’re sure it was a black SUV?” Detective Williams said.
“Positive,” I said.
“The same one the Blankenship woman rented?” the detective continued.
“I don’t know,” I said. “I didn’t even know she had rented one.”
The detective turned to Dianne. She returned his stare and shrugged.
“I didn’t get a good look at the car,” she said. “I was on the ground.”
“What was in the middle of the road that caused you to stop in the first place?” the Chief said.
“A bag of trash,” Dianne said. “Someone must have tossed it out of their car.”
“Or put it there on purpose,” I said, my neurons surging.
“Continue,” the Chief said.
“If there was a bag like that in the middle of the street, most people would stop and remove it, right?”
“Maybe,” the Chief said with a frown. “But for now, let’s assume you’re right.”
“But how could anybody know it would be you who’d find it?” Detective Williams said.
“Somebody who was following us,” I said. “From the hotel.”
Detective Williams stood up and the Chief looked up at him.
“Where are you going?”
“To see if the bag is still there,” the detective said. “And then I’m going to swing by the hotel and roust some people.”
“We’ll be here,” the Chief said.
We watched the state cop depart. The Chief focused on Dianne who was sitting quietly staring off into space. She looked exhausted and another wave of sympathy washed over me.
“Dianne?” the Chief said.
“Yes.”
“Do you have any idea who might want to kill you?” he said.
“No,” she whispered.
“You fired Claudia yesterday,” Agent Tompkins said.
“I did,” she said. “But Claudia would never do anything like that. She’s…unstable at times. But she’s not a killer.”
“Perhaps,” the Chief said. “What do you think her life is going to be like now that she’s no longer working for you?”
Dianne gave it some thought and, for a moment, I thought she was going to start crying again.
“Well, she still represents Joshua,” she said eventually. “But I suppose she’s going to have some difficulties. I’m the major source of her income.”
“Is Joshua the only other author she represents?” the Chief said.
